As you roam the countryside battling nefarious villains, the members of your party that you don't take with you remain at the Geo-Fortress in case of attack, and will be required to defend it in the event that it becomes besieged. The Geo-Fortress is probably Shining Force EXA's most innovative new feature as it serves as a headquarters for the adventurers you leave behind while you go out questing. Geo-Fortress of solitude Once Shining Force has been located (I won't give away which character actually pulls it out of the stone), your party is gifted with the customizable robot castle called the Geo-Fortress. Still, the quest for the Shining Force is only the very first part of this grand adventure, and the party should discover the blade after only about an hour of diligent exploration - then the real story kicks in. These four adventurers each have their own motivation for seeking out the Shining Force, and they've come to an agreement that they will take turns attempting to free the blade if they end up finding it. You are immediately joined by Gadfort (a burly centaur knight) and Maebelle (your typically hot elfin archer), though more characters become available to your party as the game progresses. There are two characters that you can control in Shining Force EXA: the rambunctious and brash sword-wielding Toma or the magically inclined and mysterious Cyrille. The twist comes in the fact that, out of your party of four adventurers, only one will be able to acquire the Shining Force and have their dreams fulfilled. It's a pretty boilerplate RPG set-up based loosely on the Arthurian "Sword in the Stone" myth where only one hero has the strength to pluck the blade from its rock prison.

Following in the trend of so many other action-RPG titles like Rogue Galaxy and Dragon Quest VIII, the major question on my mind was, "can this game measure up to the standard that has been set lately?" To my ecstatic delight, the answer appears to be, "yes." Sword of destiny Keeping with the series tradition, you begin the game in a party of adventurers that are all seeking the legendary Shining Force: a sword rumored to be the ultimate everything of the whole universe that grants amazing power to whoever can wield the thing. The latest offering in the series arrives on the PS2, called Shining Force EXA. Apparently, Sega has felt the same way this is blatantly obvious in the Shining Force series. Naturally, the legends of Arthur and the RPG seem like a perfect fit. Rather than stick with the classic strategy/tactics style game that Shining Force originally debuted as, Shining Force EXA follows the tradition begun by its immediate predecessor Shining Force NEO and takes more of an action-oriented approach to the traditional role-playing game dynamic. That same amount of mystery and magic can be found in the legendary tales of King Arthur and Camelot. Sega stopped by our office yesterday to show me its newest installment in the Shining Force series, and I have to say that I like where it is going with the series.
